My husband and I both had very close, wonderful relationships with our fathers. My husband's father died suddenly when he was twelve years old and my father died tragically when I was twenty five. Going through life without these men who had been so dear to us has been quite devastating and has left us both with an empty, longing place in our hearts.
My husband and I had our first baby in March 1999. Suddenly, our hearts became full again. Although we still miss our own fathers dearly and we miss that we cannot watch them as grandfathers, we are so grateful to have our son and the fatherly role my husband provides. A father contributes such a unique and special ingredient in a child's life, which varies with each father/child relationship. My father became my confidant, my best friend, especially through my teen years into adulthood. My spirit and love of life was derived from his modeling and great wisdom. I feel incredibly blessed to have had such a wonderful father and I am even more blessed to have a husband who naturally exudes these similar qualities to my son. My heart is always warm and my face can never hold back a smile when I watch my husband and son interact. Happy Father's Day -- remember to cherish the special men in your life.
